The 4 best island hopping destinations from Cebu

1. Mactan Island Hopping — best for convenience

The most popular choice because it's 30 minutes from Cebu City and Mactan hotels. Three typical stops: a sandbar, a reef for snorkeling, and a coral garden. Clear water, calm seas most of the year, and back by 1 PM.

Best for: Families, guests on short layovers, anyone staying in Lapu-Lapu or Mactan resorts.

Private boat cost: PHP 2,500–3,500 per person (min. 2 guests). Includes snorkel gear, guide, and sandbar fees.

2. Kalanggaman Island — best sandbar in Cebu

Two hours north of Cebu City, Kalanggaman is the most photogenic island in the province — a 200-metre white sandbar extending into turquoise water. National Geographic-level beautiful. Limited visitors per day because of environmental controls.

Best for: Couples, photographers, Instagram, anyone who wants the "postcard Cebu" experience.

Private tour cost: PHP 3,500–4,500 per person. Environmental fee (PHP 200) included. You need an early start — depart Cebu City at 5 AM.

3. Sumilon Island — best combo with whale sharks

Sumilon is a protected marine sanctuary 10 minutes by boat from Oslob — the natural pairing with a whale shark morning. Beautiful sandbar that shifts with the tide, excellent snorkeling in the marine reserve, and a hilltop view point.

Best for: Anyone doing a whale shark tour who wants to extend the day with a beach stop.

Private tour cost: PHP 3,200–4,000 per person standalone, or combined with whale sharks for PHP 3,800–5,000.

4. Camotes Islands — best for adventure off the beaten path

Camotes requires a 2-hour ferry from Danao port north of Cebu City, but rewards with Lake Danao (a freshwater lake on an island), Santiago Bay white sand beach, and virtually no crowds. Very different from the other options — more explorer, less resort.

Best for: Second-time Cebu visitors, travellers who hate crowds, adventurers.

Day trip cost: PHP 3,500–5,000 per person including ferry and private van on Camotes.

How a private island hopping day runs

  1. 7:30 AM — Hotel pickup from Cebu City or Mactan hotel
  2. 8:30 AM — Arrive at the pier; board your private boat
  3. 9:00–10:00 AM — Stop 1: sandbar / snorkel spot
  4. 10:30–11:30 AM — Stop 2: reef or second island
  5. 12:00 PM — Lunch stop (or bring your own picnic)
  6. 1:00 PM — Return to pier; hotel drop-off by 2:30 PM

On a private tour, you control the pace — want to stay longer at one stop? Done. Want to skip a stop that looks crowded? No problem.

Private vs group tours

Should you do private or joiner island hopping?

This is the question almost everyone asks. Here's the honest answer:

Private boat Joiner group
PricePHP 2,500–4,500/personPHP 900–1,500/person
Departure timeYour choiceFixed (usually 8–9 AM)
Who's on the boatYour group only12–20 strangers
FlexibilityFull — stay/skip any stopNone — fixed itinerary
Hotel pickupYesNo (meet at pier)
Best forCouples, families, friendsSolo on tight budget

The honest verdict: If you're travelling as a couple (2 people), the price difference between private and joiner is often just PHP 1,000–1,500 per person. For that extra amount you get your own boat, your own pace, and a completely different experience. It's almost always worth it.

What to pack for island hopping

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (reef conservation matters)
  • Rash guard or light shirt (sun on the water is intense)
  • Waterproof bag for phone and valuables
  • Cash for personal meals and environmental fees
  • Water and light snacks
  • Action camera or GoPro if you have one
  • Change of clothes for the drive home

Best time of year for island hopping in Cebu

Cebu has good island hopping conditions most of the year, but the best months are November through May — dry season with calmer seas. June to October is wet season; afternoon showers are common but mornings are usually still clear and seas are manageable.

Avoid going during typhoon season (August–October) without checking the forecast first. Our guides always monitor sea conditions and will reroute or reschedule if conditions are unsafe.
