What to expect

What is the Oslob whale shark experience?

Every morning before sunrise, local fishermen wade into the shallow waters off Tan-awan beach and scatter small krill into the sea. Within minutes, enormous whale sharks — the largest fish on Earth, reaching up to 12 metres — glide in to feed. Tourists snorkel alongside them at close range.

It's one of the most talked-about wildlife encounters in Southeast Asia, and for good reason. Watching a 6-metre whale shark move silently beneath you, its spotted skin catching the morning light, is genuinely unforgettable.

The ethics question

The Oslob whale sharks are fed daily to keep them near shore. Multiple studies show changes in rest and migration behaviour. The activity is legal and regulated, and provides income for local fishing families. Our recommendation: follow all rules — 4m distance, no touching, no flash — and book private so your group isn't mixed with a crowd of 50.

Common questions

Answers before you book

What time is pickup for an Oslob whale shark tour from Cebu?

Most private tours depart 2:30–3:30 AM from Cebu City depending on your hotel location. The exact time is confirmed after your hotel and date are checked.

Can non-swimmers join the tour?

Yes. Life jackets are provided and the water is shallow (1–3 metres near shore). You can also watch from the bangka boat if you prefer not to enter the water.

How many whale sharks will I see?

Between 3 and 10 on most days. The sharks are wild and numbers vary. We've never had a tour with zero sightings but cannot guarantee a specific count.

Is the registration fee included?

Yes — the Oslob registration fee (approximately PHP 500 per person) is included in all Cebu OK Travel private tour prices.

Can we add Sumilon or Tumalog Falls?

Yes. Add-ons depend on weather, local rules, and timing. The team confirms the realistic route before you reserve.
