Month-by-month breakdown

When to go to Cebu

December to February ⭐ Peak season

Best weather, most tourists

Cool and dry. Seas are calm, visibility is excellent for snorkeling, and all tours run without weather disruption. Christmas and New Year bring domestic Filipino tourism surges — book well in advance. February (Valentine's) is popular for couples.

Ideal for: Whale sharks, Kawasan canyoneering, Kalanggaman Island, Bohol, island hopping, Moalboal sardines.

March to May ⭐ Sweet spot

Hot, dry, excellent conditions

The hottest months, but the best sea conditions of the year. Kalanggaman's sandbar is at its widest. Crowds thin slightly after the school holiday rush in April. International tourists are highest from March to May. Water visibility is superb for snorkeling and diving.

Ideal for: Everything — this is Cebu at its most beautiful.

June ✓ Shoulder season

Fewer crowds, some rain

Sporadic afternoon rain starts but mornings are usually fine. Tours continue normally. Crowds drop after the school year ends and before European peak season. Good value and quieter attractions.

Ideal for: All tours — just be prepared for afternoon showers. Canyoneering actually operates in light rain.

July to October ⚠ Typhoon season

Wetter, windier, some disruptions

July to October is the official typhoon season for the Philippines. Cebu is actually less typhoon-affected than the north (Luzon, Eastern Visayas), but heavy rain and rough seas can cancel boat tours on short notice. Island hopping and Kalanggaman are most affected. Oslob and canyoneering continue most days.

If you must travel now: Keep a flexible itinerary and book through a private operator who can reschedule on the day rather than forfeit a marketplace payment.

November ✓ Transition month

Improving fast — a hidden gem

The tail end of typhoon season. By mid-November conditions are usually excellent. Fewer tourists than December, prices are lower, and the seas are calming. Sinulog Festival preparation begins and local atmosphere is festive.

Ideal for: Budget travelers who want dry-season conditions without peak-season crowds.

January 3rd Sunday ⭐ Sinulog Festival

Cebu's biggest event of the year

The Sinulog Grand Parade in Cebu City is one of Asia's great street festivals — a million people in the streets celebrating the Basilica del Santo Niño. Hotels book out months in advance. Book tours before and after the parade day (roads are closed in the city). Unforgettable if you plan it correctly.

Activity-specific timing

Best time for each Cebu activity

🐋 Oslob Whale Shark Tour

Year-round. The whale sharks are fed daily and appear regardless of season. Seas near Oslob are sheltered. Avoid peak holiday weekends (Dec 24–26, Holy Week, New Year) when registration queues are longest.

🏄 Kawasan Canyoneering

Best in dry season (Nov–May) when water levels are calmer and more predictable. The canyon operates year-round except the 3rd Wednesday monthly clean-up and typhoon warnings. Heavy rain raises river levels — the team checks 24 hours before.

🏝 Kalanggaman Island

Best January to May. The sandbar is at its widest and the seas are calmest for the 45-minute bangka boat ride. July to October rough seas may cancel the boat. Confirm conditions before booking.

🐟 Moalboal Sardine Run

Year-round — the sardine school lives permanently off Moalboal's Panagsama beach. Even in typhoon season, if the sea is calm enough to enter, the sardines are there. No seasonal window to miss.

🏖 Sumilon Island Sandbar

Best January to May when tidal sandbars extend furthest. July to September rough seas can affect boat access. The sandbar is tidal — morning visits show the most sandbar.

🌿 Bohol Day Tour

Year-round. The Chocolate Hills, tarsiers, and Loboc River are land-based. The only risk is the ferry (Cebu–Bohol) during rough seas. Wet season delays are rare but possible.
