The experience

What is Kawasan Falls canyoneering?

Canyoneering — navigating a river canyon by swimming, jumping, sliding, and rappelling — is one of the Philippines' best adventure activities. The Matutinao River canyon in Badian, Cebu is the most popular beginner-to-intermediate route in the country.

The route ends at Kawasan Falls, a three-tiered waterfall pouring brilliant turquoise water into a natural pool in the middle of the jungle. You arrive from above — swimming out into the pool with mist in the air. It's one of the most rewarding finishes in Philippine adventure travel.

The route: what you'll actually do

Starting from Matutinao village, guides fit you with a life jacket and helmet, then lead you 4–5 kilometres downstream through the canyon over 3–4 hours:

  • Natural water slides — smooth rock channels, sit and let the current take you
  • Cliff jumps (2–5 metres) — all optional; guides demonstrate first
  • Rope rappels — lowering down small drops with guide ropes and equipment provided
  • Deep swimming sections — life jackets make short swims easy even for weaker swimmers
  • Rest stops — guides pace your group based on energy levels

How difficult is it? (Honest answer)

If you can swim 10–15 metres without stopping and are not afraid of heights, you will complete this without difficulty. Cliff jumps are optional. All swims are short and life jackets are worn the entire time. We've guided guests aged 10 to 65 through this canyon.

Who should skip it: Anyone with heart conditions, severe vertigo, recent knee or shoulder injuries, or who cannot swim. Pregnant travellers. Message us first if unsure — we advise honestly.

Practical details

What to pack

  • Water shoes or old sports shoes with grip (no flip-flops)
  • Quick-dry shorts or rash guard

  • Change of clothes and towel for after
  • PHP 300–500 cash for bamboo raft and local snacks
  • Leave behind: jewellery, glasses without a sports strap, irreplaceable valuables

When is Kawasan closed?

The canyon closes every 3rd Wednesday of the month for government clean-up. It also closes during typhoon warnings (Signal 1+). We check conditions 24 hours before every tour and reschedule proactively.

Best combinations

Whale Shark + Kawasan — PHP 4,900 (the ultimate Cebu day) Moalboal Sardines + Kawasan — PHP 4,200 (later start) Kawasan standalone — PHP 3,900

Private vs meetup tour

A meetup (no hotel pickup) is available at a lower price if you make your own way to Badian. However, the 2.5-hour drive from Cebu City before a physically demanding activity adds significant fatigue. Hotel pickup is strongly recommended.

Preguntas frecuentes

Answers before you book

Do I need prior canyoneering experience?

No. This is a beginner-to-intermediate route. Our guides lead first-timers every single day. You'll receive a full briefing on site before entering the canyon.

Can children join the Kawasan canyoneering tour?

Children aged 10 and above can typically join. Ages below 10 are assessed individually based on swimming confidence and physical readiness. Share your group's ages during booking.

Canyoneering operates in light rain — you'll be wet anyway. It only cancels in case of extreme rainfall, typhoon warnings, or dangerous river water levels. We monitor and notify you in advance.

Is there a minimum group size?

No. We run private tours for solo travellers, couples, and families. You pay per person and the tour operates exclusively for your group.
