The experience
What is Mactan island hopping?
Island hopping from Mactan means boarding a private traditional bangka (outrigger boat) and visiting three to four small islands and marine sanctuaries in the Camotes Sea — all within easy reach of Cebu's main tourist hub. The experience combines open ocean swimming, coral reef snorkeling, sea turtle encounters, and time on white-sand sandbars, all on a vessel that belongs entirely to your group for the day.
The route is flexible: your captain adjusts based on sea conditions, your group's pace, and your preferences. No fixed schedule, no waiting for other groups.
Hilutungan Island: sea turtle capital of Mactan
The most reliably exciting stop on the Mactan island hopping route. Hilutungan Island is a protected marine sanctuary where free-swimming sea turtles — primarily green and hawksbill species — are encountered year-round in the shallows. The reef is healthy, the water is clear, and turtles are spotted on the vast majority of visits.
Unlike some destinations where you chase turtles from distance, the Hilutungan turtles are accustomed to respectful snorkelers and often pass within metres. No touching, no chasing — guides ensure wildlife interaction rules are followed.
Nalusuan Island
A small island with a marine fish sanctuary surrounding it — the underwater world here looks like a living aquarium. Schools of tropical fish of every colour crowd around the coral; nurse sharks occasionally rest on the sandy bottom. The island itself has a small beach area and basic facilities for a rest stop.
Caohagan or Olango Island (route add-on)
Caohagan Island is a tiny traditional fishing village island accessible only by boat — no cars, no development. Walking through it gives a glimpse of coastal Filipino life that most tourists in Mactan never see. Olango Island has a bird sanctuary (migratory birds, November to April) and additional snorkeling spots.
