The experience

What is Kawasan Falls canyoneering?

Kawasan Falls canyoneering is a guided river trek through the Matutinao River canyon in Badian, southern Cebu. The route follows the river downstream for 4 to 5 kilometres through narrow gorges, turquoise plunge pools, natural water slides, rope swings, and cliff jumps ranging from 3 to 12 metres.

The activity ends at Kawasan Falls itself: a three-tier cascading waterfall with a brilliant turquoise pool fed by a cold mountain spring. On a private tour, your group arrives before the mainstream crowds, meaning you often have the pool to yourselves for the first hour.

The cliff jumps: what to expect

Cliff jumping is the signature thrill of the route. Jumps are optional — guides clearly mark which platforms are 3m, 6m, 8m, and 12m, and there is zero pressure to jump anything you're not comfortable with. The most popular jump is the 6-metre platform into a natural plunge pool.

All jump sites are checked by guides before each group enters the water. Life vests are mandatory throughout the entire canyon section.

Route overview: step by step

  1. Start point: Matutinao, Badian — your guide registers the group and issues life vests and helmets
  2. Canyon entry: Wade into the river and begin the downstream trek
  3. First gorge: Narrow rock walls, waist-deep river crossing, first natural slide
  4. Mid-route jumps: 3m, 6m, and optional 8m platforms — guides position for safety
  5. Rope swing: Popular photo and video stop
  6. Final section: Deeper pools, tube ride (optional — separate rental), approach to the falls
  7. Kawasan Falls main pool: 30–45 minutes to swim, rest, and take photos in the turquoise basin
  8. Exit and return: Habal-habal motorbike or private van back to start point

How difficult is it? (Honest answer)

If you can swim 10–15 metres without stopping and are not afraid of heights, you will complete this without difficulty. Cliff jumps are optional. All swims are short and life jackets are worn the entire time. We've guided guests aged 10 to 65 through this canyon.

Who should skip it: Anyone with heart conditions, severe vertigo, recent knee or shoulder injuries, or who cannot swim. Pregnant travellers. Message us first if unsure — we advise honestly.

Practical details

Who can do canyoneering at Kawasan?

Canyoneering is suitable for anyone who can swim independently and is comfortable in moving water. There is no minimum age requirement, but the activity is best suited to children aged 10 and above. Most fit adults complete the route without difficulty.

People with heart conditions, recent injuries, or severe fear of heights should consider whether the activity is appropriate — there are unavoidable water crossings even if all jumps are skipped.

What to bring and wear

  • Swimwear under shorts — no denim or heavy cotton
  • Secure water shoes or sports sandals with ankle straps
  • Waterproof dry bag for phone and valuables
  • Reef-safe sunscreen (applied before the canyon)
  • Change of clothes and towel for the return journey
  • PHP 300–500 cash for optional tube rental and snacks at the falls

When is Kawasan closed?

The canyon closes every 3rd Wednesday of the month for a government-mandated clean-up day. It also closes during typhoon warnings (Signal 1+). We check conditions 24 hours before every tour and reschedule proactively — you will always be notified in advance.

Best time to visit

Kawasan is accessible year-round but the dry season (December to May) offers the clearest water and most stable weather. After heavy rain, the river runs murkier and water levels rise — guides may restrict or close certain sections.

Questions fréquentes

Answers before you book

Is canyoneering at Kawasan safe?

Yes, when done with a certified guide. All guides are trained in swift water rescue and carry first-aid kits. Life vests are mandatory for every participant regardless of swimming ability. The route has been run for over a decade and serious incidents are rare when safety rules are followed.

Do I need prior canyoneering experience?

No. This is a beginner-to-intermediate route. Our guides lead first-timers every single day. You'll receive a full briefing on site before entering the canyon.

Are the cliff jumps mandatory?

No. Every jump on the route is optional. Guides offer alternatives such as slides or wading around the jump platforms. There is no pressure to jump anything you're not comfortable with. Many guests skip the higher platforms and still have an incredible experience.

How long does canyoneering take?

The full canyoneering route plus time at Kawasan Falls takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. With hotel pickup from Cebu City, the full day is typically 7 AM departure returning by 5 PM. Adding Moalboal sardines or Oslob whale sharks extends the day to 16+ hours from Cebu City.

What age is suitable for Kawasan canyoneering?

Children aged 10 and above who can swim independently are generally suitable. Children under 10 can visit Kawasan Falls itself (without the canyoneering route) and still enjoy the pool and waterfall — ask about the falls-only option.

What happens if it rains?

Canyoneering operates in light rain — you'll be wet anyway. It only cancels in case of extreme rainfall, typhoon warnings, or dangerous river water levels. We monitor conditions and notify you at least 24 hours in advance.

Is there a minimum group size?

No. We run private tours for solo travellers, couples, and families. You pay per person and the tour operates exclusively for your group — no joining strangers.
