What to expect

The private Kawasan canyoneering experience

This is one of the Philippines' most rewarding adventure routes. Starting from Matutinao village in Badian, you navigate 4–5 kilometres of the Matutinao River canyon over 3–4 hours — finishing at the iconic three-tiered Kawasan Falls.

Every jump is optional. Every slide is briefed. Your private guide sets the pace around your group — not a shared tour's fastest hiker.

What's in the canyon

  • Natural water slides — smooth rock chutes that funnel into clear pools
  • Cliff jumps (3 m, 5 m, 8 m) — fully optional, guides demonstrate first; most first-timers try the 3 m jump
  • Deep swim sections — 20–30 metres; life jackets provided, guide assistance available
  • Rope rappel descent — one short guide-assisted drop into a plunge pool
  • Rest stops — we pace for your group's energy, not a fixed tour schedule
  • Kawasan Falls finish — swim into the turquoise pool under the mist, rest on bamboo rafts

Day schedule

  • 5:00 AM — Hotel pickup, private air-conditioned van
  • 7:00–7:30 AM — Arrive Matutinao. Gear fitting, briefing (15 min)
  • 7:30–11:30 AM — Canyon route: slides, jumps, swims, rope descent
  • 11:30 AM–1:00 PM — Kawasan Falls: swimming, bamboo raft, rest, lunch (own expense, local food available)
  • 1:00 PM — Drive back to Cebu City
  • 3:30–4:00 PM — Hotel drop-off

Common questions

Before you book

How fit do I need to be for Kawasan canyoneering?

Moderate fitness. You need to be comfortable in water and able to swim 20–30 metres — the life jacket provides buoyancy for the entire route. You'll be walking over uneven, slippery rock for 3–4 hours. Cliff jumps are optional at every section. Most healthy guests aged 10–65 complete it without difficulty.

Why is pickup at 5:00 AM? That seems very early.

The drive from Cebu City to Matutinao in Badian is 2–2.5 hours. The 5:00 AM pickup gets you to the canyon entrance by 7:30 AM — before the midday heat, before the canyon fills up, and ensuring you finish the route while you still have energy. It also allows time for lunch at Kawasan Falls and a comfortable return drive.

Can children join the canyoneering tour?

Children aged 10 and above who are comfortable in water can typically join. Ages under 10 depend on individual swimming confidence and physical readiness — message us before booking and we'll advise honestly. All cliff jumps are optional and children can choose to slide or walk at every section.

What if it rains on the day?

Light rain is normal and doesn't stop the canyon — you'll be wet anyway. We cancel only when there are extreme rainfall warnings, Signal 1+ typhoon, or unsafe river water levels. We check conditions 24 hours before every tour and notify you proactively. If we cancel, we reschedule or refund in full.

When is the canyon closed?

The Matutinao canyon closes every 3rd Wednesday of the month for government clean-up day. It also closes during typhoon warnings. We check your requested date and confirm availability before any payment is requested.

Can I combine canyoneering with the whale sharks in one day?

Yes — this is one of our most popular combinations. The Whale Shark + Kawasan combo departs at 2:30 AM for whale sharks in Oslob, then continues to Kawasan for canyoneering. It's a 14–16 hour day and requires good fitness, but it covers two bucket-list activities in one trip. From PHP 4,900/person.
