Beyond the parade

You're Already Flying to Cebu for Sinulog. Here's What Else to Do.

Sinulog is one Sunday. Most flights from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and beyond aren't cheap enough to book for one day — so here's how other visitors turn the same trip into a full week of whale sharks, canyoneering, and island hopping around the festival.

Why bother

The parade is one day. Your flight isn't.

Sinulog's grand parade runs a single Sunday — January 17, 2027. Almost nobody flies in Saturday night and out Monday morning; the flights are either too expensive or don't exist on those exact dates. Most Sinulog visitors end up with 4 to 7 days in Cebu whether they planned for it or not.

The problem: the festival guide covers the parade, the tickets, and where to stand. It doesn't tell you what to do with the other 5 days. This page does.

Tours that work around parade week

Two things make a tour "Sinulog-week friendly": it can't depend on roads the parade closes, and it needs to run on a normal weekday schedule so it doesn't collide with novena masses or the fluvial procession.

  • Oslob whale shark tour — 2:30 AM pickup, well outside Cebu City, done and back before the day's festival events start. The single best "before the parade" tour.
  • Kawasan Falls canyoneering — 2.5 hours south in Badian, unaffected by any city road closure. A full adventure day for the middle of your trip.
  • Mactan island hopping — departs from a Mactan jetty, not Cebu City, so it's unaffected even on parade Sunday itself if you'd rather skip the crowds.
  • Bohol day tour — a full day off the island entirely. Good for the day right after the parade, when the city is recovering and hotel service slows down.
  • Kalanggaman Island or Sumilon Island — add one if you have a 6th or 7th day. January is peak season for both sandbars.

A sample 5-day Sinulog week

  1. Day 1 (Thu/Fri) — Arrival. Settle in, easy evening, no early alarm.
  2. Day 2 — Oslob whale sharks + Sumilon. 2:30 AM start, done by early afternoon. Rest that evening for the parade.
  3. Day 3 (Sunday) — The parade. No tour today. Full day for Sinulog itself.
  4. Day 4 — Kawasan Falls canyoneering. A physical, high-energy day once the festival crowds have thinned.
  5. Day 5 — Mactan island hopping. An easy final morning before your flight home.

Add Bohol or a 6th day for Kalanggaman if your flights allow — see the full 5-day Cebu itinerary for a version without the festival built in, or the Cebu itinerary hub for 3 to 7 day variants.

Booking around the festival

What's different about booking tour dates in January

  • Guides and vehicles get scarce. January is Cebu's single busiest month. Confirm your tour dates 3 to 4 weeks ahead, not the usual 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Avoid the parade Sunday for anything in Cebu City. Tours departing from or returning through the city center on parade day face real delays. Tours that start outside the city (Oslob, Kawasan, Bohol ferry) are unaffected.
  • Hotels fill before tours do. If you haven't booked accommodation for Sinulog week yet, that's the more urgent deadline — see the Sinulog Festival guide for hotel timing.
  • One reservation fee, flexible dates. A PHP 500 reservation fee secures each tour day. If your festival schedule shifts, tell us and we adjust before anything is finalized.

Common questions

Planning tours around Sinulog

Can I do a private tour on the day of the Sinulog parade?

Tours that start outside Cebu City, such as Oslob whale sharks, Kawasan canyoneering, or the Bohol ferry, are not affected by parade-day road closures. Tours needing to cross through central Cebu City that Sunday should be scheduled a different day instead.

How many extra days should I add to a Sinulog trip?

Most visitors add 3 to 6 days beyond the parade itself. Four days covers the parade plus two tours. A full week comfortably fits the parade, Oslob whale sharks, Kawasan canyoneering, Mactan island hopping, and a Bohol day trip.

Do tours cost more during Sinulog week?

Tour pricing itself does not change for Sinulog. What changes is availability — guides and vehicles book out faster in January, so confirming your dates early matters more than usual.

Should I book tours before or after confirming my hotel?

Confirm your hotel first. Hotel availability for Sinulog week is the tighter constraint and should be locked in 2 to 3 months ahead. Tour dates can be confirmed once your hotel and full arrival window are set.
