Simala Shrine

Simala Church: How to Visit the Castle-Like Shrine in Sibonga

A hilltop shrine with castle towers, a long line of devotees and a strict dress code. What to know before you go.

Quick answer: Simala Shrine, the Monastery of the Holy Eucharist, sits on a hill in Lindogon, Sibonga, in south Cebu. It is about 2 hours by car from Cebu City. Entry to the shrine is free, and visitors follow a modest dress code: no shorts, sleeveless tops or short skirts. On our private tours, Simala is a PHP 1,000 per person add-on on the drive back from the Oslob whale sharks.

Before you go

  • Where: Lindogon, Sibonga, on the south road between Cebu City and Oslob.
  • Travel time: about 2 hours from Cebu City by car, longer in weekend traffic.
  • Dress code: shoulders and knees covered. Long pants or a long skirt and a shirt with sleeves.
  • Behavior: quiet inside the church and the halls of letters and offerings. Ask before taking photos of people praying.

Best time to visit

Weekday mornings and early afternoons are calmer. Sundays and Catholic feast days bring the biggest crowds and the longest wait to enter.
