Fiesta Señor 2027
Fiesta Señor 2027: The Religious Heart of Sinulog
Behind the street party is the feast of the Santo Niño, Cebu's most important religious celebration.
Quick answer: Fiesta Señor honors the Santo Niño, the image of the child Jesus given to Cebu in 1521. In 2027, nine days of novena Masses run from January 8 to 16 at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, the fluvial and foot processions take place on Saturday, January 16, and the feast day and grand parade fall on Sunday, January 17. Visitors are welcome at all of them.
The story of the Santo Niño
In 1521, Ferdinand Magellan's expedition gave an image of the child Jesus to Rajah Humabon and his wife, Hara Amihan, at their baptism in Cebu. Decades later, in 1565, a soldier of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi found the image unharmed in a burned house. A church rose on the spot, now the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño.
The Sinulog dance began as a prayer. Its two steps forward and one step back follow the current of a river, called sulog in Cebuano.

The fluvial procession
On Saturday morning, the Santo Niño crosses the water on a decorated boat, followed by a fleet of fishing boats and ferries. It recalls the arrival of the image by sea. Crowds gather along the Cebu City waterfront to watch it come in.
The solemn foot procession
Saturday afternoon brings one of the largest processions in the Philippines. Devotees walk behind the image through downtown Cebu City, many carrying candles. The route is slow and crowded, so join at a side street rather than the start.
How visitors take part respectfully
- Dress modestly for Mass: shoulders and knees covered.
- Join the candle offering outside the Basilica, where women dance a short Sinulog prayer for you.
- Ask before photographing people praying.
- Keep to the side during processions and follow marshals.
- Bring water and arrive early, since lines for Mass run long.
Plan your days around the feast
Saturday and Sunday are the busiest days in the city. Many guests visit the Basilica on a weekday of the novena for a calmer visit, then keep the weekend for the processions and parade. Read the Sinulog first-timer tips and the complete Sinulog guide for the parade side.
