Magellan's Cross and the Santo Niño Basilica
Where Christianity in the Philippines began in 1521, all within a short walk in downtown Cebu.
Quick answer: Magellan's Cross marks the spot where Ferdinand Magellan's expedition planted a cross in Cebu in 1521. It stands in a small chapel next to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Philippines, founded in 1565. Fort San Pedro is a short drive away. Plan 1 to 2 hours for all three. They are the morning stops on our Cebu City and uplands tour.
The downtown heritage stops
- Magellan's Cross: the 1521 cross, encased in wood, in a small chapel with a painted ceiling.
- Basilica Minore del Santo Niño: home of the Santo Niño image and the center of the Sinulog festival.
- Fort San Pedro: a Spanish-era stone fort by the port.
- Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House and the Heritage of Cebu Monument in the old Parian district.
Dress and crowd tips
Cover shoulders and knees inside the basilica. Fridays and Sundays draw large crowds for Mass, and January is the busiest month because of the Sinulog and the Fiesta Señor. Keep bags in front of you in the plaza.
